Middle Class

In the 2008 presidential campaign, Barack Obama continued to blast Republican rival John McCain for “not getting” the financial anxiety of the American middle class. Obama continued this theme that Republicans just do not connect with the middle class in his reelection campaign in 2012. His rhetoric, however, proved less appealing in 2012 as middle-class incomes overall continued to decline. Both Democrats and Republicans understand that they need to win middle-class voters. Republicans are primed to win this vote.

The white middle-class vote has been in the Republican column since the 2012 election and increased in the midterm 2014 elections.

If Republicans have a problem with Hispanic and minority voters, Democrats have a greater problem with the white population.

The issue for Republicans is sustaining the white middle-class vote, while extending it to minority voters and aspiring blue-collar voters by emphasizing job creation, economic growth, educational reform, and national security.

This means distancing itself from its image (and policies) as a party of big business and the country-club set. Instead, the party needs to stand for serious entitlement and education reform, equal opportunity, and national unity.
